Description

This beautiful All Wood 16' ribbon striped mahogany speed boat has enjoyed a spectacular 2 year restoration (completed in the spring of 2008) where absolutely no corners where cut. It took many tedious hours to re-veneer (West system) the exterior surfaces and hand brushed with 16 beautiful coats of Pettit Z-Spar 2015 Marine Varnish. Professionally performed by Don Hardy at Link > McCall Boat Works of McCall, Idaho<. Once the varnish had cured, the boat was hand smoothed, color sanded and finally buffed to perfection. The near perfect white bottom gel coat over wood is the original along with graphite coated flat bottom and turn fin. The Buzz'd graphics and registration lettering are surface painted after varnish by hand can be removed to name your choice and register in your state. On Land or Water, this boat draws crowds wherever it goes!!! More Details and History Below...

Origin/Builder: This boat was hand built by a serious Idaho craftsman and boating enthusiast, the late Colonel Martin Johnson of the Idaho National Guard in Boise, Idaho and was originally powered by a rare 1969 Mercury Racing 1250BP Engine (before my purchase it was apparently sold to a collection in Hawaii). From what I have uncovered, the Colonel built somewhere between 10-15 Wood Boats during the mid to late 60's, most were inboard V-drives and only a few outboards (only a few have survived and this particular boat is believed to the finest survivor and only outboard). Since it was was restored and shown here in Idaho I have had many Old Timers immediately notice this boat as built by the Colonel. Stories told: It spent many weekend days at Lake Lowell in Nampa, Idaho challenging other boats, Plans for the boat were derived/revised from small wood gas .049 powered hobby boats like the "Dumas Ske Vee-10". During my last on water event (McCall, Idaho) I did meet up with the Colonel's son who recalls helping dad build this very boat, he seems to recall it may have been a bit earlier built than originally thought (his contact info is included to the final buyer upon payment).

Equipment

Outboard Engine: 1977 Mercury Racing 1500XS Inline 6 Cylinder "J" block with lower water pick-up. This engine came off a known fresh water low hour donor boat (Glas-Tech Tunnel my next resto). The engine is 100% original, cosmetically restored but not rebuilt with good 130-135 compression on all cylinders. The power-head was removed and everything else was either media blasted or stripped and refinished in Mercury Phantom Black Enamel. All new internal wiring, fuel pump diaphragms, H20 Pump, resealed lower unit & checked gears, mid bushings, NOS transom clamps and bushings, new power trim hoses, custom black delrin transom wedge, Hoss Triton-1 Surfacing Propeller 24P and CORRECT replacement metallic decals in kit form by Dale Littlejohn ($350 not the cheap $49 sets you can buy from Canada on eBay) Much More...

Hardware/Trim: Due to spending most of it's life indoors and a cockpit cover, all of the original gauges and hull hardware are amazing near pristine originals. It has been converted to floor accelerator with CP Performance button billet shifter. Noted items include a very rare and pristine "Keller" Precision 75mph speedometer with original pick-up hardware, original Kiekaffer-Mercury 8,000 rpm tachometer, NOS "Step-N-Trim" Manual Trim Tabs, all new internal wiring (done right, all solder, heat shrink, inline fuses with power shut-off), rear deck added, 9 gallon Spun Aluminum Fuel tank with Shut-Off, Original Steering Collar with Single Ride Guide Cable, New Morse Red Shift/Gas Cables and much more...

Trailer: Original Midwest "SK Style" trailer (Salt Lake City, Utah) completely sandblasted to bare metal, new modified fenders/steps, primed, sanded and treated to a professional Black base-coat/clear-coat Noted items: Vintage scroll style pinstriping, matching step pads,  new wiring with updated plug in lighting, new hubs/seals/bearings, BF Good Rich Radials, Crager Mag Wheels and hidden Drop Down Storage Wheel. Perfect weight distribution, very low tongue weight and tows flawlessly. Could easily be towed by a light duty Classic or Street Rod. Note, it has traveled a few thousand round trip miles to shows in California and Arizona from Idaho so some minor expected chips have been touched up.

Included: Comes with everything I have, restoration records, receipts, son of original builder contact, matching vests, towels, ropes/anchors, cover (always stored indoors), extra props, vintage trick water skis seen in photos, huge photo restoration file, Inline Six Repair Manual and much more..

Known Facts

Free and Clear Private Party Owned in Boise, Idaho. Trailer/Boat/Motor Sold on Bill of Sale. Idaho does not require a title on boats or trailers under 2,000 lbs. I am not going to make a bunch of speed claims or anything of the sort but I will tell you it is a spectacular show type restoration. Show on Land or Water, "YOU WILL DRAW CROWDS". This is a smooth water boat that will require that you dial or prop it in for your specific altitude use, cocktail, adrenaline speed and/or pleasure.

It hung indoors from the rafters of my garage for 4 years before I could gather the $ to attack a full bore restoration because I just loved it's lines, style and rarity. Not a money making adventure, more of a passion, exceeding 25k invested. During the restoration it was never my intent to restore and sell it but due to a new business venture, it must go and someone is going to get a beautiful piece at a fraction of what it cost to restore.
