The 5th generation of the
Chevrolet Corvette or C-5 was produced during the
1997/2004 model years and represented a whole new era for
GM's iconic sports car with "extensive" design and
engineering changes. A new hydroformed box frame was
introduced and the 4L60E automatic transmission was
relocated, creating a rear-mounted transaxle style
assembly. This stretched/extended the wheelbase 8" inches,
widened the overall width 3" inches and only added 1" inch
to the overall length.
Not only would this create a
better handling car but the typical weak frame
rattle/squeak tendencies of the C4 Corvette would be
drastically improved. The sharp exterior lines of the
dated C4 were reshaped, softened and the extended
wheelbase allowed for a roomier and/or more ergonomically
redesigned passenger seating area. In the end, the
redesigned C5 chassis would last at least 2 future
generations and was much better than the C4, in every
single category.
