The "50 Year Itch", this
stoic and uniquely rare "53 Buick Super Convertible" rests
on a very thorough and respectful 6 year restoration
inspired by checking-off one of the very last items on
"The Bucket List". Driven by one of life's journeys and 5
decade old memories, the goal was to duplicate a long lost
car, that had brought a retired automotive enthusiast from
Nebraska to the San Diego, California area in 1956, only
better than the car he had scraped up enough pennies to
buy himself, almost 50 years earlier. Over the the years
he had restored a couple of Corvette's but with only 6,701
of the these Super Drop-Top's produced, he knew that
finding the one he could afford, would be a Super
Challenge.
The search continued until
2006 when he was finally able to locate a rock solid, low
mile and needle in a haystack type project. A single family owned
model 56C that had been carefully maintained during it's
1st life, passed from Father to Son and finally to a 60
car Museum for display when a heavy snowstorm resulted in
damage to several cars within the collection and only
minor damage to the windshield of the Buick. Shortly
thereafter, a full restoration was organized, repaired and
for some reason, it was never fully completed. During this
purchase, not only was he surprised how solid and complete
the car was but he was able to establish a long term
friendship with the original Family.
The complete and thorough
nut/bolt restoration from this point would take 6 years,
throughout this process, he had other car buff friends
help him navigate and complete the restoration. During
nearly every step, he had help from somebody, particularly
when he had some health issues that slowed the project.
"If it weren't for friends and relatives, I could not have
got it done". In closing, he was able to enjoy his journey
once again and rest easy, knowing his bucket list was
complete. It's now your turn to re-visit yesterday...
